Curlin vs. Big Brown

Thursday, February 5th, 2009

Every sports spectator hopes to witness an unforgettable game, one that he will cherish as the most impressive milestone in sports history in its own right. Muhammad Ali versus Joe Louis was to boxing as the Los Angeles Lakers versus Boston Celtics is to basketball. In the word of modern thoroughbred racing, people want Curlin versus Big Brown. And who can blame them? Both thoroughbreds have won major thoroughbred events, are fast, and champions in their own right.

Promoters at Suffolk Downs have raised the stakes to $5 million just to lure both horses to participate in the 2008 Massachusetts Handicap (MassCap). Big Brown is the winner of the 2008 Preakness and 2008 Kentucky Derby, while Curlin is the reigning Horse of the Year and the victor of the 2008 Dubai World Cup, the largest-pursed thoroughbred racing event in the world. Such achievements entail the question, “who is the best thoroughbred right now?”

Curlin is the best bet, with wins in the Rebel Stakes (2007), Arkansas Derby (2007), Jockey Club Gold Cup (2007), Jaguar Trophy Handicap (2008), Stephen Foster Handicap (2008), Preakness Stakes (2007), and the Breeders’ Cup Classic (2007).

Big Brown, who was poised to win the 2008 Triple Crown, failed after losing the Belmont Stakes.

Overall, if both horses run in the upcoming 2008 MassCap, Curlin may be the heavy favorite.
